Artist statement

Fikira Music is an Afro-Fusion-Jazz quartet, assembled by composer/drummer/producer Fiaindratovo (Mimy) Manavihare with friends from Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Fikira’s music crosses musical styles - African pop, afro-beat, jazz, latin and funk, uniquely influenced by the Banaike rhythm and dance of the Antandroy people from the South of Madagascar. Our concerts showcase a high level of musicianship, producing soulful music, high energy rhythms and encouraging audience participation.

All group members have extensive experience performing with other bands, and also producing, recording and composing their own work. The band includes electric bass, piano, trumpet, drums/percussion and singing in Malagasy.

Fikira’s music is composed by Fiaindratovo (Mimy) Manavihare, who also plays the drums and sings all of the lyrics in his native language from Madagascar.

Our vision

Our mission is to introduce our audience to the rich cultural diversity of Madagascar. For so many years, African history has been written from an outside perspective. We want to rewrite this narrative and present our history from our own experience. This effort is not only important for our audiences, but will also give a voice to the next generation of artists in Madagascar, allowing them to embrace their roots and express their culture through art.

In the near future, our goal is to compose and arrange our Banaike-influenced music for the symphony orchestra. The Western classical music scene is dominated by European and Western composers. We hope to break that barrier, to broaden the reach of music from Madagascar and introduce African influence to classical music audiences.
